What is a control Valve?
A control valve (also known as a regulating valve) is a crucial component in industrial automation and fluid handling systems, designed to precisely regulate the flow, pressure, temperature, or level of process media.
Unlike isolation valves that simply turn flow completely on or off, a control valve operates continuously to maintain a specific setpoint. It acts as the "muscle" of an automated system, receiving signals from a controller (like a PLC or DCS) and adjusting its opening accordingly.
How it works
A control valve typically consists of two main assemblies: the valve body and the actuator.
- Signal Reception: The valve receives an electrical or pneumatic signal (e.g., 4-20mA) from a control system based on real-time feedback from sensors.
- Actuation: An actuator (powered by compressed air, electricity, or hydraulic fluid) converts this signal into mechanical movement.
- Flow Adjustment: This movement changes the position of the internal trim (such as a plug or ball) relative to the valve seat, altering the flow area to increase, decrease, or stabilize the fluid flow.

Common Types of Control Valves
Control valves are categorized based on their structure and the type of actuator used:
- By Structure: Globe valves, angle valves, sleeve valves, and V-notch ball valves are commonly used for precise throttling and flow regulation.
- By Actuator: Pneumatic control valves (fast response, intrinsically safe), electric control valves (easy power supply, high precision), hydraulic control valves (high thrust for heavy-duty applications), and self acting control valve (regulators).
